Visualization Project
For this project,
I decided to do a comic strip on how to regulate your emotions for young
elementary special education students. I decided to go with a comic strip for
this project because I figured for younger students, pictures help aid in the understanding
of the text. I chose simple pictures so that it does not overwhelm my students
and so that it is easier to follow along with for them. I only added a few
items to each section of the comic strip so that they are able to focus on the
information on in instead of other random items in the pictures.
Creating
this visualization project really helped deepen my understanding for the topic
in many ways that just reading alone probably would not have. One way that it
did that was by helping me realize that some peoples calming mechanisms or the
way they go about them may be different than the way other peoples. It will
help students make those connections when they look at it so that they know
there are many different strategies. Another way that this visualization
project deepened my understanding of the topic is by giving those examples
calming mechanisms, it leaves the door open for other students to voice other
examples of calming mechanisms as well. The last way it deepened my
understanding of the topic is by using fewer and simpler visuals, it already
gives a type of calming aspect to the visual showing that just putting yourself
into a calming environment can also help with your emotions.
This project has
influenced my thinking on visualization as a vehicle for learning in many
different ways. First, it showed me how easy it is to make a fun and more
engaging lesson for our students. It also showed me that not every piece of
information you give has to be the most in-depth and detailed thing ever. That
sometimes the text being straightforward and to the point can help your
students learn the best. Another thing it has influenced for me is my potential
use of it in my future classroom. After this assignment, I think I will use
visualization quite often because it gives the students extra support and
understanding while reading. I also think that this will make lessons much more
engaging for my kids especially if they get to do an assignment where they get
to make their own.
